WE’VE ALWAYS KNOWN WE JUST HAVE TO REMEMBER
-NAIWENI (first female chief of the Yawanawá people)

The Yawanawa People

The Yawanawa live along the Gregorio River in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon, protecting 200,000 hectares of rainforest, 95% of which remains intact. Guardians of deep spiritual and ancestral wisdom, their culture was nearly lost after years of conflict and persecution.

In the 1980s, the Yawanawa reclaimed their territory and ancestral heritage. Guided by the last great elders and shamans, Pajé Tata and Yawarani, they embarked on a powerful cultural and spiritual revival, strengthening their rituals, songs, art, and identity.

Today, the younger generations proudly carry this legacy, blending guitars, flutes, and drums into their traditional prayers. Their music and spirituality now resonate worldwide, sharing the message of the forest through prayer, sacred teachings, and unique musicality.

Meet Shawma & Keneihu Yawanawa

Keneihu and Shawma come from a long line of leaders and were raised as such. Following their ancestor's footsteps and legacy in Mutum Village, they have been in contact with the medicines, dietas and other spiritual studies of the Yawanawa people, deep in the heart of the Brazilian Amazon. They are both incredible musicians with strong, captivating voices and compose beautiful music on the guitar with the saitis - the ancient Yawanawa prayers. As a couple, they bring a beautiful force to the ceremonies, combining the Yawanawa female and masculine universes with responsibility and beauty.

Keneihu Yawanawa

Keneihu Yawanawa is the oldest daughter of the spiritual leader Matsini Yawanawa, chief of Mutum Village - a very respected leader of the Yawanawa people, brother to Hushahu & Putanny Yawanawa. She is a young female leader and has been representing her people in ceremonies around the world pursuant to her deep study of the Yawanawa tradition ever since early age.

Keneihu has already undertaken different Yawanawa diets in the guidance of her father, and for being the oldest sister of 7 more women, Keneihu carries a potent Yawanawa female force, together with a deep sense of responsibility with her tradition. Keneihu carries an unique powerful voice and is an excellent guitar player, due to that she already took part in different musical & art projects like the “The future is ancestral” album, carried out by the Brazilian DJ Alok, having presented at big places like the Grammy’s & the UN in NYC.

Kene is a living symbol of the force carried by indigenous women and brings a powerful presence wherever she goes.

Shawma Yawanawa

Shawma Yawanawa is son to Chief Nixiwaka Biraci Yawanawa, a grand leader of the Yawanawa people & chief of the Yawanawa Sacred Village - the last Yawanawa Village on the Gregório River, a powerful land where the entire Yawanawa nation got to live together before the contact with the western world. Today, Shawma lives in Mutum Village together with his wife Keneihu, where he supports spiritual works and other cultural activities within his community.

A young leader of his people, Shawma has represented the Yawanawa in ceremonies around the world, guided by his deep study of ancestral knowledge and spirituality. He has undertaken sacred diets under the guidance of Yawanawa elders, carrying a strong sense of responsibility for preserving and continuing his people’s traditions. With a commanding presence and powerful voice, he embodies the strength of the Yawanawa masculine force wherever he goes.

Shawma is also a gifted singer and musician. His natural talent with the guitar has led him to participate in several artistic projects, including the album The Future is Ancestral with Brazilian DJ Alok. Through his music and leadership, Shawma carries the wisdom and force of his people, representing the living continuation of the Yawanawa tradition and spirituality.
